Seminar Organized at Quantum-“Disaster management in India: The Journey So Far And Beyond”

Quantum Global Campus, organized a seminar on the topic “Disaster management in India: The Journey So Far And Beyond”. The seminar emphasized the need of disaster management particularly in Uttarakhand and neighbouring hill states. The opening ceremony of Seminar took place at Shyamji auditorium with lamp lighting by Chief Guest, Dr. U. S. Rawat, (Vice – Chancellor, Sri Dev Suman University), Shri Kapil Joshi (Conservator, Uttarakhand Forest Department), Brigadier Sanjay Sharma (Command Head Quarters, Lucknow), Prof. Rajat Agarwal, Prof. Vinay Sharma (IIT Roorkee) and other distinguished Guests. Dr. S. C. Handa, Director General, Quantum Global Campus welcomed all the guests and shared his views on the importance of disaster management in changing scenario.

Prof. Rajat Agrawal in his keynote address discussed the impact of disasters on human lives and advised the steps for disaster management. Brigadier Sanjay Sharma shared his experience in handling disasters, like earthquake in Sikkim in September, 2013. He talked about the role of different government agencies and ministries involved in disaster management. He appraised the role of training students and people to minimize the affects of disaster. Shri Kapil Joshi highlighted the importance of forests as an asset for the nation and discussed in detail about the affects of disaster on forests. He also stressed on the need to save the forests in order to avoid the disasters.

The Chief Guest in his address highlighted the need of planned development in hill states, keeping in view the disaster that Uttarakhand witnessed two years ago. These hill states are sensitive and the frequency of disasters has increased in last few years. The disaster management professionals are responsible to save the lives of the people as well as to help them in bringing back to mainstream.

A panel discussion was also organized on the disaster management in which the experienced people from different fields shared their ideas among whom the keynote speakers were Prof. Vinay Shankar (IIT Roorkee) and Mr. R. S. Virmani (Retd Principal, BSM College). The panel discussion was also attended by the PhD and M. Tech research scholars from IIT Roorkee, Gurukul Kangri University and Dev Sanskriti University and MBA and B.Tech students of Quantum Global Campus. Prof. Vinay Sharma (IIT Roorkee) moderated the panel discussion and also shared his views on the subject. It was a very interactive session in which the students and guests raised different issues related to disaster management.

The topic of the Seminar, “Disaster management in India: The Journey So Far And Beyond”, stimulates us to think about the impact of disasters and the ways to manage them particularly for hill states of India.

The other dignitaries in the occasion included, Mr. Ajay Goyal (Chairman, Quantum Global Campus), Mr. Shobhit Goyal (Secretary, Quantum Global Campus), Prof. Rohit Kushwaha (Director, Quantum School of Graduate Studies) and Prof. Gulshan Chauhan (Director, Quantum School of Technology). Prof. Rohit Kushwaha expressed vote of thanks to all the guests and participants. The program concluded with the presentation of “Kulgeet” by the students of Quantum Global Campus.
